Alanine – a description and useful properties of this amino acid

Alanine entered the scientific circles in 1888 with the presentation of the Austrian scientist T. Weyl, who found the primary source of alanine in silk fibers.
In the human body, alanine originates in muscle tissue from lactic acid, which is considered the most important substance for the metabolism of amino acids. Then the liver absorbs alanine, where its transformation continues. As a result, it becomes an important component in the process of producing glucose and regulating the level of sugars in the blood. Due to this, alanine is often used to prevent hypoglycemia and to stimulate the rapid release of glucose into the bloodstream. Alanine is able to turn into glucose, but if a need arises, thereverse reaction is possible.
Alanine is also known as a structural component of carnosine, the main reserves of which are concentrated mainly in skeletal muscles, cells of the brain and heart. By its structure, carnosine is a dipeptide – two amino acids (alanine and histidine) that are linked together. In different concentrations, it is present in virtually all cells of the body.
One of the tasks of carnosine is the maintenance of acid-base balance in the body. But besides this, it possesses neuroprotective (important for the treatment of autism), anti-aging, antioxidant properties. It protects body against free radicals and acids, and also prevents excessive accumulation of metal ions, which can damage cells. Also, carnosine can increase the sensitivity of the muscles to calcium and make them resistant to heavy physical exertion. In addition, the amino acid is able to get rid of irritability and nervousness, to ease headaches.
With age, the level of this substance in the body decreases, and in vegetarians this process proceeds more rapidly. The deficiency of carnosine can easily be cured by a diet rich in protein foods.
In the human body there are two forms of alanine. Alpha-alanine is a structural component of proteins, while the beta-form of this substance is part of pantothenic acid and other biological compounds.
In addition, alanine is an important component of the nutritious diet of the elderly, since it allows them to remain more active, gives strength. However, alanine’s track record does not end there.
Other important tasks of this amino acid are the support of the immune system and the prevention of the formation of kidney stones. Alien formations are formed as a result of ingress of toxic insoluble compounds into the body. And actually, the task of alanine is to neutralize them.
Studies have shown that the secretory fluid of the prostate contains a high concentration of alanine, which helps protect the prostate gland from hyperplasia (symptoms: severe pain and difficulty urinating). This trouble, as a rule, occurs against a background of amino acid deficiency. In addition, alanine reduces edema of the prostate, and is even part of the therapy for the treatment of prostate cancer.
